Nonbacterial vegetations on the heart valves.

چکیده
Like most controversial topics in medicine, the truth probably lies between the two schools of thought. In the early acute Case-roughly within the first 48 hours-operation is indeed quite simple and there is no contraindication to its performance in an otherwise fit patient provided a skilled surgeon is available and that there are full facilities for operative cholangiography. Surgery is also indicated if the gall bladder has perforated before admission or if the disease does not settle with conservative treatment, when a cholecystotomy us usually necessary. However, in the patient whose acute attack has been in progress for some days, or who is grossly fat or a poor risk or who is in a hospital where adequate operative facilities are not available, a conservative regimen is the wiser course better a living problem than a dead certainty.

Surgical management of nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis in malignancy
BACKGROUND Nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis is commonly seen on heart valves in patients with malignant or collagen diseases. The natural prognosis of nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis is reported to be poor due to underlying malignancy. Surgical indications and appropriate timing for surgery for nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis and underlying malignancy have not been formally studie...
متن کاملCASE REPORTS Isolated Gonococcal Pulmonary Valve Endocarditis: Diagnosis by Echocardiography
The perplexing clinical course of a 23-year-old black male with isolated gonococcal pulmonary valvular endocarditis is presented. M-mode echocardiography provided the first clue to the presence of pulmonary valvular vegetations and the proper diagnosis. Since Neisseria gonorrhea appears to have a particular affinity for the pulmonary valve, the presence of isolated pulmonary valvular endocardit...

متن کاملVegetations in infective endocarditis. Clinical relevance and diagnosis by cross sectional echocardiography.
Cross sectional echocardiography identified vegetations in 45 of 62 (73%) patients who had clinical evidence of active infective endocarditis. The sensitivity of this technique in diagnosing vegetations in infective endocarditis was 93% and the specificity 89%. The predictive value of a positive test was 96% and that of a negative test 80%. Vegetations were detected with a similar frequency on ...
متن کاملRole of the vegetation in experimental Streptococcus viridans endocarditis.
This study examines the role of the vegetation in catheter-induced experimental endocarditis in predisposing to bacterial colonization of cardiac valves and in influencing the course of the disease and response to penicillin therapy. Platelet-fibrin vegetations developed at areas of valvular trauma and were colonized when Streptococcus viridans were injected intravenously. Pretreatment with war...
